The craft of basket weaving, or basket making, has a long history and was also an important and common craft at the beginning of the last century. The basket maker traveled through the region on foot or with a handcart with a large pile of baskets for sale.
Basket weavers used a variety of natural materials, depending on what was available locally. Willow branches were probably the most popular material for basket weaving. They are flexible and strong when wet, which makes them ideal for braiding.
While baskets were the most obvious creations, basket weavers made much more than just utility baskets. They produced a wide range of products such as bread baskets, laundry baskets, shopping baskets, and picnic baskets. But also agricultural tools such as harvesting baskets and crates for collecting and transporting agricultural products.
The techniques of basket weaving were diverse and required a lot of skill. This craft was not only important for the practical needs of daily life, but was also valued as a form of culture. Today, basket weaving is a beautiful hobby and the workpieces are used as decoration.
