This Sunday, the hard craft of the blacksmith will take centre stage in the museum during the blacksmith’s day. The blacksmiths of the Boerenbondsmuseum give demonstrations and show the tricks of the trade, without of course revealing the blacksmith’s secret.

Between 1900 and 1940, the blacksmith was indispensable, especially in rural areas where technological and industrial progress penetrated more slowly than in urban centers. This artisan manufactured and repaired essential tools and items such as agricultural implements and horseshoes, which were crucial to daily operations and the local economy. The blacksmith’s role went beyond his craftsmanship; He often acted as a kind of engineer who solved problems and provided tailor-made solutions to the diverse needs of his fellow villagers.

The forge, with its distinctive blacksmith fire and sturdy tools, was the heart of both economic and social life in the village. Here, iron was forged on an anvil, heating the metal until it became malleable and then struck into the desired shape with hammer and anvil.
