N.C.B. Destructor
Destructor companies process animal carcasses and biological waste hygienically and safely. Companies such as Rendac transform cadavers into products for industries such as animal feed and cosmetics. The N.C.B. Destructor building in the Boerenbondsmuseum sheds light on the history and relevance of this sector.
Destructor companies play a crucial role in the processing of animal carcasses and other biological waste. A well-known example of such a company is Rendac in Son en Breugel, which is active in the processing of animal remains. A replica of the N.C.B. Destructor, the predecessor of Rendac, can be seen at the Boerenbondsmuseum.
In 1922 the “Meat Inspection Act” came into force. This stipulated that the burial of animal remains had to come to an end within 10 years. From 1934 onwards, deceased animals were no longer allowed to be buried.
Role of destructor companies
Destructor companies are responsible for the safe and hygienic processing of animal carcasses. These companies collect the carcasses from farms, which may involve livestock such as cows, pigs, and sheep. After collection, these carcasses are processed into products such as animal meal and fats, which can then be used in various industries, including animal feed, cosmetics and even in the bioenergy sector.
The process of cadaver processing starts with the collection of the carcasses from farmers, which in the past was often coordinated in collaboration with organizations such as the Boerenbond. These carcasses are then taken to the processing facility where they are cooked and sterilized. This process ensures that any pathogens are killed and that the remains can be safely processed into new products.
At the Boerenbondsmuseum you can read and see more about the history and importance of cadaver processing. Providing visitors with an insight into these processes will raise awareness about the importance of sustainable farming practices and animal disease management.

The destructor building at the Boerenbondsmuseum
The destructor building is a replica of a building that was built in Son in 1934 by the N.C.B. (North Brabant Christian Farmers’ Union). The building at the Boerenbondsmuseum contains a complete factory layout with original restored machines. The whole has been supplemented with photos and other historical materials from the Rendac archive. The building in Son used to be powered by a steam engine, which is present in this museum building. You can also see a restored DAF cadaver truck from 1934, which collected the dead animals at the time. The laboratory from 1934 is authentic.
