The Bakehouse
In the past, baking bread on the farm was a central part of everyday life. Many farms had a separate bakehouse, where the bread was baked. This bakehouse was an essential facility on the farm, not only for baking bread, but also for other household chores.
In the farmhouse there was a large oven that was heated with dried branches, which provided a constant and high heat, necessary for baking bread. White bread or rye bread was often baked in these ovens, depending on what was available in terms of ingredients and personal preference.
In addition to baking bread, the bakehouse was also used for other household activities. For example, it was a place where people cooked, and the bakehouse also served as a space for washing and drying laundry. This multifunctional role made the bakehouse an indispensable part of farm life.
In the bakehouse at the Boerenbondsmuseum, bread is still regularly baked, just like in the old days.
